Singer 12 New Family

The Singer New Family Model 12 sewing machine was produced from 1865 until roughly 1902.
This beautiful 1883 Singer 12K New Family machine was on loan from a private collection.

It’s a smaller machine than you might expect, and the wooden base and machine slide into the wooden case through the end of the case.

It’s a transverse shuttle machine, meaning that the boat shaped shuttle runs back and fourth lengthwise to the machine as opposed to swinging front to back.

New addition to my personal collection

This 1873 model 12 was a rescue, it needs some repairs, and it’s not as fancy as the hand crank model above, but I’m delighted to have it. This will be a project machine, so check back to see my progress.
Notice that the treadle irons don’t have any of the Singer emblems on them, that is correct for this machine.
