Singer 24

This is a Singer model 24-24 chain stitch machine. The model 24 was produced from 1888 to the mid 1940’s in quite a few variants. Also of note, the model 24 balance wheel turns clockwise, the opposite of most Singer sewing machines.
Small machine

This machine is larger than the toy sized Singer model 20, but it’s still smaller than you might expect. It’s roughly the same size as a Willcox and Gibbs Type 508A.
Uncovering the mechanics

With the base plate in place the 24-24 looks like an extremely simple chain stitch, along the lines of the toy sized Singer model 20. Removing the base plate and hook covers reveals a rather complex system for lifting and driving the feed dogs.
Chain stitch

The Singer 24-24 makes a simple, but very nice chain stitch. From the top it looks almost the same as a lock stitch, but you can see the chain when you flip the fabric over.
