Singer Sewing Machines

Singer Merritt 8734

A client dropped this machine off and asked if it was worth cleaning up and putting back into service. It had a cover over it, so I didn’t even know what brand it was till I put it on my bench. As soon as I saw it I started calculating the odds that the machine was a write off.

Blown feed dog drive gear

I turned the hand wheel, it turned smoothly and the needle moved, but I could also see that the feed dogs sat motionless. I opened the bobbin cover and found that the hook moved properly, but it didn’t really matter since it can’t feed the fabric. You will also see in the above photos the plastic hook gear and cam stack drive gear.

Convertible bed

As you can see from the photos above, this machine has a bed extension allowing it to be converted from flat bed to free arm. This bed extension doesn’t have any storage compartments like you would find on them in future machines.

Drop in cam stack

This is one of the fancier machines in this line since it had quite a few built in stitches, plus you could change between drop in cam stacks. I did look around online and I was unable to find any cam stack other than the “Cam Stack A” that came with the machine.

Under the top cover

Here you have a better look at the cam stack holder, and all the other parts hidden beneath the top cover.

Metal sub frame

Like most machines including the plastic wonders of today, this machine has a metal skeleton that keeps things rigid and heavy enough that they don’t vibrate themselves off the table ever time you use them.
