Singer 221 Featherweight
The model 221 Featherweight is probably Singer’s most iconic sewing machine.
The original Featherweight was manufactured from 1933 to 1961, and the later Tan (1960-1962), and White (1963-1970), versions were manufactured until 1970 or so.
It’s an all metal, half sized, rotary hook, drop feed machine.
The machine came with it’s own fitted carry case with room for spare bobbins, foot control, accessories, etc. If you have one of these original cases, don’t be tempted to carry it by it’s 50+ year old handle.
The .4A Featherweight motor
The machines sold in the United States featured a .4 amp motor. The motor mount was built into the base of the machine.
I rewired and replaced the grease wicks in this motor. I’ll write a more detailed article about rebuilding one of the motors as soon as I have a chance.

Drop down bed extension
The left-hand working surface of the Featherweight is hinged so that the extension can be folded up against the needle bar cover retention screw. There were two bed extension lengths offered. The machine above has the long extension, but there was a short version also. The bed is connected to the machine by two hinge screws, and each screw uses 2 washers. I usually remove the bed extension when I’m working on one of these machines.
