Mercury Electric

This is a model 15 clone made in post war Japan. I don’t know who the manufacturer was, but it’s badged “Mercury Electric”. Mercury Electric was well known for making sewing machine motors and motor controllers. I’ve seen one other design marked “Mercury Electric”, and it was also a class 15 clone.

I wrote an article that may also interest you, “working on a frozen vintage sewing machine“, it features this same sewing machine.

This machine had nice plates, but the humidity in Florida has taken it’s toll. Once rust has broken through the chrome or nickel plating you never really restore it to it’s original luster without having it stripped and replated.

The wires on this had been ripped out, so I pulled it apart and rewired it. It didn’t have a motor controller with it, but I will dig through my parts and find a Mercury Electric motor controller and a duplex socket to run the machine off of.
