Replace a broken Shuttle Driver Cushion Spring

The broken shuttle driver cushion spring on my 1932 Singer model 15-91

The first thing I should mention is that you do not need to remove the hook drive shaft from the machine to replace the shuttle driver cushion spring. I removed the hook drive shaft from this machine because it was part of a larger project even before I found the broken part.
Make absolutely that you have a driver bit that fits the shuttle driver cushion spring screws. These screw are very small and have a rather shallow driver slot. The shuttle driver cushion spring screws came out and installed without issue, but a poorly fit driver bit will make the job difficult if not impossible.
Take your time and do your work over a white towel so that when you drop one of those tiny screws you don’t end up on your hands and knees looking for it under your work bench.
Last tip, heat the shuttle driver with a hair dryer before you try undoing the screws. Give yourself every advantage getting the screws out without issue.

The replacement shuttle driver cushion spring came from a 1947 15-91 parts machine. I swapped the springs in the two machines, but kept the screws with their original machines.

The repaired hook drive shaft.
