Singer 758 Touch & Sew
The Singer 758 Touch & Sew is one of the more budget-minded models in the Touch & Sew lineup. It includes only zig-zag and buttonhole stitches internally, with additional stitch patterns available through Singer “Fashion Discs” or “Flexi-Stitch” (top hat–style) cams.
Otherwise, it’s a fairly standard 700 Series Touch & Sew machine, featuring a slant-shank presser foot and a full rotary hook. It uses plastic Touch & Sew bobbins that are wound in place, rather than on an external bobbin winder.
Like other Touch & Sew machines with model numbers above 630 (on American models), the 758 is prone to issues related to its plastic drivetrain components, including gears, cam lobes, and cam stacks.
Tensioner
The 700 Series machines also tend to have an overly complex tension system, which can make proper adjustment more challenging.
External cams
As stated earlier, the Singer 758 Touch & Sew uses Singer “Fashion Disc” or Singer “Flexi-Stitch” (Top Hat style) stitch pattern cams. The lack of an internal cam stack doesn’t limit this machine as much and one would think. The use of external cams simplified and reduced the price of the machine, and the wide availability of top hat cams allowed the owner to choose what cam sets they needed or wanted for their machine.
Plastics
No conversation about the Singer 758 Touch & Sew would be complete without mentioning the use of plastic gears in the drive train. Note: I broke the cam stack drive gear when I dropped it on the floor, so it didn’t get broken in the natural use of the machine, that said it wouldn’t have broken it had been made of steel
Motor
The motor has “J30 460171” printed on it, and it has three wires that exit it’s body, two black and one red.
