Domestic Sewing Machines

Domestic D

Long term project machine

I cleaned the dust and loose rust off with a soft brush, then wiped the machine down with mineral oil. There are beautiful decals hidden in there. The front of the machine is pretty rough, but I’ve seen far worse. I’ve got the machine loose enough that the shuttle carrier makes a full sweep, but it’s still quite stiff. This is pretty common, and it will loosen up as I work on it.

This is an “as found” Domestic Sewing Machine Company model “D”. The machine was rescued from the landfill by the seller, and a friend and I bought it as a joint project.

I’m not sure the cabinet is salvageable (I’m not a woodworker), but the iron parts are in good shape. The wheel is attached to the right side of the cabinet, and the treadle is attached to the floor, and they’re connected through a metal pitman arm.

As stated in the opening, this is a project machine that needs a lot of work. Please check back now and then for updates.

Slide plates, shuttle, and bobbin

I managed to get the slide and throat plate(s) off, then extract the shuttle and bobbin. The bobbin had white and then black thread on it. The bobbin winder is still frozen, so I can’t rewind the bobbin yet.
